Day01FEB 17

Negombo

Negombo is a coastal city in Sri Lanka’s Western Province, located beside a lagoon and the Indian Ocean approximately 10 km from Bandaranaike International Airport. Known for its long beach, fishing heritage, canals, seafood, and historic Catholic and Dutch-era architecture, it is a convenient first or last stop on a Sri Lankan itinerary. LGBT travelers should note that same-sex sexual activity remains illegal in Sri Lanka, and recent sources report that government support for an LGBTQ+ inclusive tourism campaign was withdrawn; exercise discretion and confirm accommodation policies in advance.

Puttalam/Anuradhapura/Dambulla

A diverse north-central Sri Lankan itinerary linking the coastal and lagoon landscapes around Puttalam with the ancient cities of Anuradhapura and the Cultural Triangle hub of Dambulla. Dambulla provides access to the Dambulla Cave Temple, Sigiriya and nearby village and wildlife experiences, while Anuradhapura is known for its extensive ancient Buddhist monuments and sacred sites. Sigiriya

Sigiriya is a small heritage destination in Sri Lanka’s Cultural Triangle, best known for the UNESCO-listed Sigiriya Rock Fortress, or Lion Rock. The area combines dramatic archaeological remains, panoramic viewpoints, dry-zone forest, village landscapes, and easy access to nearby attractions such as Pidurangala Rock, Dambulla, and Minneriya National Park. Most visits are focused on climbing the rock, exploring the ancient royal complex and frescoes, and using Sigiriya as a base for cultural and wildlife excursions.

Matale/Kandy

Matale is a mid-sized hill-country town in Sri Lanka's Central Province, lying in a broad valley about 25 km north of Kandy on the main road to Dambulla and the Cultural Triangle. Surrounded by the Knuckles Mountain Range foothills, it is the heart of Sri Lanka's spice-growing region, famous for cinnamon, pepper, cardamom and the roadside spice gardens where visitors can tour plantations and sample Ayurvedic products. The town itself is known for the colourful Sri Muthumariamman Thevasthanam Hindu temple, the gilded Aluvihare Rock Cave Temple where the Pali Buddhist canon was first committed to writing, and as a gateway to Nalanda Gedige and Riverston. Nearby Kandy, the last royal capital of the Sinhalese kings and a UNESCO World Heritage city, adds the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic, a scenic lake and the Royal Botanical Gardens at Peradeniya, making the Matale–Kandy corridor one of the most visited inland regions of the island. The climate is warm and humid with cooler evenings, and the area is easily reached by road or by the scenic Kandy–Matale railway line.
